Imagining Radical Communitites of Care

Imagining Radical Communitites of Care

Imagining Radical Communitites of Care by Picket Realists.

The workshop has been developed from the recent event at the Anti University Now festival. Building upon this experience the structure consists of three loose practical exercises to create sharing circles, facilitating trust and imaginative conversation.

Workshop Format:
- Sharing stories through meaningful (or meaningless) objects
- Mapping/drawing our own personal geographies of care,
- Group sharing, and opening up those points of care to find links with other communities of care and the role of institutions in shaping these experiences.

Details: 2pm - 3.30pm Saturday 18th August, part of Fountayne Road Open Warehouse Day
FREE WORKSHOP email daphnepoliti@gmail.com to book your space. Spaces are limited!

Care is a fundamental practice in human life. Though it comes in many distinct modalities, care is at the base of all forms of social reproduction, traversing both public and private spheres. Whilst performed as intimacies its dominant forms are inspired by, and inseparable from institutional structures and hegemonic discourse.

The fervent financialization of the public and the private life in the context of austerity, renders state-provided care marginal in all sectors. Through exploring embodied modes of care we hope to map the different ways in which individuals and communities give and receive care, and how these are made (in)visible. We want to create a collaborative praxis of the ways in which care is enacted by participants with radically diverse experiences. We will travel through each others spaces, learning how to rearticulate care as a radical political demand.

Through our own individual understanding of care, and extending this to wider geographies, we look to the forces that determine how we locate care in our daily experiences. We will then use these reflections to discuss how we can conceptualise what a radical community of care could look like. By comparing our maps we can learn from practices of care performed in different political contexts and spaces.

Who are Picket Realists?

Picket Realists are a group of students who came together during the UCU strikes. By working together by using shared resources, they formed under the desire to create radical spaces of experiment, where the parameters of potential are set by those who participate.

Wing Chun: A Beginners Introduction
Aug
11
7:00 PM19:00

Wing Chun: A Beginners Introduction

Wing Chun is a concept-based martial art and form of self-defense utilising both striking and grappling while specialising in close-range combat. It is widely known as the first martial art Bruce Lee studied before rising to Hollywood fame.

What will I learn?
During this 3 hour beginner's introduction you will be guided through and shown how to apply simple and effective techniques that stem from the underlying principles that Wing Chun encompasses:

  • Simplicity - fighting as simply as possible but not any simpler with maximum results

  • Directness - following the most direct path of attack to attack

  • Economy of Motion - moving as efficiently as possible

  • Economy of Energy - using only the energy needed

  • Relaxation - freely moving without the use of brute strength and tension

  • Simultaneous Attack and Defense - nullifying your assailants attack whilst delivering an attack of your own at the same time.

What can I expect to take away from this beginners introduction?
You will have a basic understanding on how to use Wing Chun to defend yourself from the most common kinds of attacks.

Is this suitable for females?
Absolutely. Legend has it that the system was created by a Buddhist nun. The system relies upon redirecting your assailants energy and using it against them, rather than using brute strength to overcome your aggressor.

Come and train in a relaxed and friendly environment. No previous experience required!

£12, spaces are limited, to book email mail@theannexspace.com.

The Tool Box - A Beginners Intensive in Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign

The Annex presents:

The Tool Box - A Beginners Intensive in Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign.

The Annex is hosting Graphic Designer Daniel James to teach an interspersed three day workshop in Adobe CC Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign for beginners.

The intensive will:

  • Give you a foundation in graphic design software.
  • Image editing skills.
  • To use design software for print and web for your business or portfolio.
  • To understand technical jargon like knowing your JPEGs to your tiffs!

The Sessions

The three sessions have been designed that you can attend one of the session or all three. It is highly advisable to take all three sessions as most graphic work demands a mixture of these softwares to create.

Session 1 Intro to Graphics & Photoshop, Saturday 27th June (10am-6pm)

Daniel will first go through the important basics in graphics. The rest of the session will be focused on Adobe Photoshop, an image editing software. You will get to grips with program tools, how to edit images and create ready artworks for print and web.

Session 2 Illustrator,  Sunday 28th June (10-6pm)

Daniel will take your through Adobe Illustrator, a design and graphic editing software tool. You will learn program tools, editing and designing digital graphics with practical exercises.

Session 3 InDesign & Create your own work,  Saturday 4th July (10-6pm)

InDesign is a design software for print and desktop publishing. Learn how to lay out for print, go through typography, grid systems (composition), and structure for what you are publishing. The second part of the session you will use all the skills learnt in session 1,  2 and 3 to produce a poster with guidance from Daniel to take away with you.

The Workshops are a mix of teaching, practical exercises and guidance. Daniel will have material and examples to work with in the session but you are also welcome to bring preexisting projects or ideas to use as samples whilst learning the programs.

To Book

Places are limited so book online quick! Online bookings only.

We have an Early Bird Offer until 9th June.

Women Fight Back - Urban Krav Maga with Claire Bott

Too many women today have been taught to believe that they “can’t” defend themselves, or that “fighting back doesn’t do any good” against an attack. UKMW aims to stamp out these myths, and to provide women with effective self-defence techniques.

Come and join us at The Annex for self defense classes on Wednesdays specifically for women. Classes are led with Claire Bott, 1st Female UKM instructor in the UK. See Claire's website for more details.

Class is £ 4 for an hour session!

Places are limited so please book your place in advance by emailing mail@theannexspace.com

UKMW is the women-only branch of Urban Krav Maga. UKM is an established and internationally successful martial art, founded by Stewart McGill .

FAQ with Claire on Urban Krav Maga

What you can achieve? You can commit as much or as little time as you like. Most UKMW techniques are quite simple and straightforward. My aim is that someone could come to a single class and walk away with something that will be useful to them; but equally, coming on a regular or semi-regular basis will strengthen your understanding of the techniques and the degree to which they become second nature to you. Ultimately, it’s up to you!

What’s the difference between this and the mixed-gender class?  As far as the techniques themselves go, very little. The main difference is that the women’s class focuses more on defending against the kind of attacks that women are most likely to face.
